The process by which this happens is called the legislative process. Americans choose men or women to vote on bills that define the rights of other Americans.
The nation-state our interlocutor is referring to where "what he thinks about jews" becomes "their rights" in a straightforward, linear progression that Ms. California neither implied nor suggested - is known as a monarchy. With him as king.
You miss the point here... I guess I'll be giving YOU a little lesson: The law was created to keep order and defend the rights of our people, right? do you follow? Then our democratic system was created with the purpose to let the people decide, still following? So what happens when the people 'decide' on something that violates the rights of a group of individuals?
Not too long ago, inter-racial marriage wasn't legal. Do you recall? What would YOUR situation be if this was still so? How is same-sex marriage any different from inter-racial marriage?
I could go on and on. The system isn't always perfect. Would you argue that it is?
